Adobe pizza oven

Adobe pizza oven
Adobe pizza oven: Wood-fired adobe pizza/bread ovens have a long history in the southwest, often being refered to as Hornos. Our oven is large enough for a 11" pizza or a couple loaves of bread. We also chose to build in a flue pipe so that we won't have to deal with smoke in the Arizona room. People who have such ovens profess that their is nothing better than pizza and breads backed in their adobe ovens...

Concrete and can foundation...

Concrete and can wall going up...

Backfilling form with dirt and rubble...

A top layer of sand is applied and then fire bricks are tapped flat and smooth into place...

The form for the inside is made of moist sand, approximately 20" in diameter and 20" tall..

Flue pipe is placed, then a layer of newspaper and finally adobe is applied...

We applied three 2" thick coats of adobe, scratching in between layers...

Ready for the final layer of adobe...

The pizza oven after the sand has been removed, now ready for a final coat of plaster...

Our pizza oven in the Arizona room, complete with operable flue pipe...
